"The black of the plate": This term is used to describe the very edges or corners of the home plate. It refers to the narrow strip of black rubber that extends along the outside edges of the white portion of the plate. Hitting "the black of the plate" generally means throwing a pitch that barely grazes or clips the outer edges, maximizing the chance of being called a strike.
