Breathe, Pitcher. Breathe.

Last night during a virtual lesson, I watched a young pitcher working so hard to “get it right” that she forgot one of the simplest, most powerful tools she has:

Her breath.

And instantly it took me back to my college playing days. Back to the version of me who was so locked in, so tense, so determined to be perfect… that I forgot to breathe too.

Some of you may not know this, but in college I had a nickname.

Robot.

And honestly? I earned it.

I moved stiff.
I pitched stiff.
I thought stiff.

Every motion felt mechanical, tight, and rigid—like someone had wound me up and sent me onto the mound without an ounce of rhythm or flow.

At the time, I didn’t understand why my body felt that way.

I didn’t realize that so much of the tension I was carrying came from something incredibly basic:

I was holding my breath.

Looking back now, I wish I had known then what I know today.

I wish I had the tools to move with more fluidity.
To feel the natural rhythm of my body.
To understand that looseness and power can absolutely exist together.

I wish someone had told me sooner:

Your breath is part of your pitch.

When we hold our breath, everything in the body tightens.

Our muscles grip.
Our shoulders climb.
Our timing gets rushed.

Everything closes up when what we really need is space to move.

But when we breathe—really breathe—our body responds.

It softens.

It organizes.

It activates the right muscles without forcing anything.

Instead of pitching with tension, we start pitching with intention.

Sometimes something as simple as a slow inhale before you start your motion…
Or a steady exhale as you drive forward…

Can be the difference between feeling stuck and feeling smooth.

Between forcing the pitch and flowing through it.

So here’s a reminder from someone who had to learn this lesson the hard way:

You’re not a robot.

You’re an athlete.

And athletes breathe.

Your power doesn’t come from clenching.

It comes from flow.

Your breath creates rhythm.
Your rhythm builds confidence.
And that confidence is what helps everything come together.

So the next time you step onto the rubber, try something simple.

One deep breath.

In… and out.

Let your shoulders drop.
Let the tension melt.
Let your body settle into the moment.

Then pitch with the freedom it took me years to find.

You’ve got this.

As I always say: #CalmStrongPitching

And I’m cheering you on every breath of the way.
