That Girl Isn't Perfect—She's Built: The Softball Mindset for Lasting Confidence

By Coach Andrea | DR3 Fastpitch Certified & Virtual Instructor

Social media loves to talk about "that girl."

You know the one.

She's confident.

She's disciplined.

She's productive.

She always seems to have everything together.

But here's the truth...

That's not what "that girl" looks like on the softball field.

Because softball has a way of humbling every athlete.

Even the best pitchers have rough outings.

Even the strongest hitters strike out.

Even the most confident players battle self-doubt.

Perfection isn't what makes a great softball player.

It's resilience.

The Version of "That Girl" That Really Matters

The athlete who succeeds in this game isn't perfect.

She's the one who learns to trust herself.

She's the girl who keeps showing up even when progress feels slow.

She's the one who puts in the work when nobody is watching.

She has bad practices.

She gives up big hits.

She walks batters.

She strikes out.

She makes errors.

But she refuses to let one moment define who she is.

That's the version of "that girl" I hope every player strives to become.

Confidence Isn't Something You're Born With

One of the biggest misconceptions in softball is that confident athletes are simply born that way.

They're not.

Confidence isn't a personality trait.

It's a skill.

And just like pitching mechanics, hitting, or fielding, it has to be developed over time.

Real confidence isn't loud.

It doesn't come from posting your highlights online.

It doesn't come from having a perfect game.

It comes from keeping the promises you make to yourself.

Every workout you complete.

Every bullpen you finish.

Every practice where you choose effort over excuses.

Every moment you decide to keep going instead of giving up.

That's where confidence is built.

Stop Letting One Game Define You

One of the hardest lessons every softball player has to learn is this:

One performance does not determine your potential.

A tough inning doesn't define you.

A bad tournament doesn't erase your talent.

One mistake doesn't change how hard you've worked.

The athletes who grow the most understand that failure is part of the process—not the end of it.

Instead of asking,

"Why did this happen to me?"

They begin asking,

"What can I learn from this?"

That simple shift changes everything.

Discipline Builds Confidence

Motivation comes and goes.

Some days you'll feel excited to practice.

Other days you won't.

That's normal.

The athletes who continue improving aren't the ones who always feel motivated.

They're the ones who stay disciplined.

They show up anyway.

They keep working anyway.

They trust that consistency today creates confidence tomorrow.

That's the difference.

Becoming Someone You Can Count On

Being "that girl" isn't about impressing everyone else.

It's about becoming someone you can trust.

Someone who competes with confidence.

Someone who responds instead of reacts.

Someone who keeps moving forward regardless of yesterday's results.

Because the strongest athletes aren't the ones who never struggle.

They're the ones who refuse to quit growing.

Trust the Process

At DR3 Fastpitch, we believe that athletic development is about so much more than mechanics.

Yes, fundamentals matter.

Yes, skill development matters.

But the mental game matters too.

Learning to stay calm under pressure.

Learning to trust your preparation.

Learning to believe in yourself even when things don't go your way.

Those are the qualities that create confident athletes on and off the field.

Final Thoughts

If you're chasing anything this season...

Don't chase perfection.

Chase growth.

Chase consistency.

Chase becoming the athlete who continues to show up, even when it's hard.

Because the players who go the farthest in this game aren't the ones trying to be perfect.

They're the ones building confidence one practice, one lesson, and one pitch at a time.

Remember...

That girl isn't born.

She's built.

As I always say...

I'm cheering you on every step of the way.
