Preseason Reflection: The Honest Conversation Every Pitcher Should Have With Herself

Spring season is getting closer, and this is one of my favorite times of the year to talk with pitchers.

Not because everything is perfect yet.
Not because everyone feels 100% ready.

But because this is the moment where growth really happens.

There comes a point in training where you get honest with yourself.

Not in a harsh way.
Not in a “I’m not good enough” way.

But in a grounded, self-aware way.

It sounds more like curiosity than criticism.

Questions like:

Where am I at right now?
What feels strong in my mechanics?
What still feels a little inconsistent?
If I had a few more intentional reps each week, where would I focus them?

This kind of reflection is one of the most powerful tools a pitcher can have.

Because real improvement doesn’t come from pretending everything is perfect. It comes from being aware enough to recognize both your strengths and your opportunities to grow.

And if you’ve been showing up this winter—throwing, training, working on mechanics, putting in the reps—you’ve already done something worth being proud of.

Winter training is about building.

It’s about laying foundations.
Stacking pieces.
Developing movement patterns.
Strengthening both your body and your mindset.

The offseason is where a lot of quiet work happens.

But now, as preseason approaches, the focus starts to shift.

Now it’s about preparing with purpose.

Preseason is the moment where you take everything you built during the winter and ask yourself an important question:

How do I want to feel stepping into the circle this spring?

Confident?
Controlled?
Powerful?
Calm under pressure?

That feeling doesn’t appear by accident.

It comes from being just honest enough with yourself to say:

“I’ve worked hard… and I can still grow here.”

There’s no pressure in that statement.

There’s no perfection required.

Just awareness.

Because when you understand where you are right now, you can be intentional about where you’re going next.

And here’s the exciting part for pitchers:

Every small, intentional rep you choose to do between now and the start of the season adds up.

Physically and mentally.

Each bullpen builds rhythm.
Each drill reinforces mechanics.
Each focused rep strengthens confidence.

You’re not just training your body.

You’re training belief in your mechanics.
You’re training trust in your preparation.
You’re training the ability to stay confident under pressure.

That’s what separates pitchers who feel prepared when the season starts from those who feel rushed.

So take a moment this week.

Reflect on your winter training.

Be proud of the work you’ve already done.

And then get curious about what you still want to sharpen before the season begins.

That’s where real growth lives.
