27 Lessons Softball Taught Me Before My 27th Birthday

Earlier this year I turned 27, and it made me pause and reflect on everything this game has taught me.

Softball has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I think back to the younger version of myself stepping into the circle for the first time, I smile a little.

She had no idea what was coming.

She didn’t know about the pressure of the mound, the emotions of tough losses, or the quiet pride that comes from working through something hard. She just loved the feel of the ball in her hand and the power of standing alone in the circle.

Over the years, the game taught me far more than mechanics or velocity.

It taught me how to be a good teammate.
How to compete with composure.
How to handle failure and keep showing up anyway.

These aren’t the flashy lessons you see on highlight reels.

They’re the small truths that slowly shape you as an athlete and as a person.

So after turning 27 this year, I started reflecting on some of the lessons softball has taught me along the way.

If you’re a young pitcher reading this, consider it a note from someone a few steps ahead on the same path.

27 Things I Learned as a Softball Player

  1. Your attitude is contagious. Make it a good one.

  2. Confidence isn’t loud. It’s quiet and steady.

  3. You don’t have to be the biggest player to become the best one.

  4. Cry if you need to. Then wipe your face and go again.

  5. The mound will expose your emotions—learn to regulate them early.

  6. Breathe before every pitch. It resets everything.

  7. Your teammates feel your energy before they hear your words.

  8. Hustle is a skill. Practice it daily.

  9. A great change-up beats a fastball thrown with doubt.

  10. Failure is feedback, not a final verdict.

  11. The best pitchers listen more than they talk.

  12. “Next pitch” might be the most powerful phrase in softball.

  13. Being coachable will take you further than talent alone.

  14. Strong legs create strong pitchers. Train your mind just as much as your body.

  15. Celebrate your teammates loudly. It always comes back around.

  16. You will outgrow old versions of yourself—and that’s a good thing.

  17. Nerves mean you care. Learn to ride them instead of fighting them.

  18. Consistency beats intensity over time.

  19. A great teammate shows up on the hard days too.

  20. Mechanics matter—but mindset decides the moment.

  21. You don’t need permission to be great.

  22. Some days your best will look different. That still counts.

  23. Learn the difference between confidence and ego.

  24. Trust your preparation more than your mood.

  25. The game teaches life lessons if you’re paying attention.

  26. The pitching circle is a privilege. Honor it.

  27. One day you’ll be the example someone else looks up to—be someone worth watching.

I didn’t learn these all at once.

Most of them came after tough games, quiet car rides home, long bullpen sessions, and seasons that tested me in ways I didn’t expect.

But every lesson stacked slowly over time, like bricks building something stronger.

And to the next generation of pitchers reading this:

You don’t have to be perfect.

You just have to keep showing up.

Because the mound has a way of meeting you right where you are—and teaching you exactly what you need next.
